Hydrant Flow and Pressure Testing

Hydrant Flow and Pressure Testing

1. Hydrant Flow and Pressure Testing

Hydrant flow and pressure testing is conducted to assess the adequacy of the available water supply for fire-fighting purposes and to verify compliance with the National Building Regulations, SANS 10400.

Fire hydrants form a critical component of a site’s external fire protection infrastructure, and insufficient water flow or pressure can significantly compromise emergency response efforts during a fire.

2. Purpose of Testing

The purpose of hydrant flow and pressure testing is to confirm that sufficient water pressure and flow are available to support effective waterborne fire-fighting operations at a specific site.

Testing also provides objective verification that hydrant installations meet the minimum performance requirements prescribed by SANS 10400.

3. Site Inspection and Verification

A site plan indicating the location of all fire hydrants is required prior to testing. A physical site inspection is conducted to ensure that hydrants are clearly identified, readily accessible, and available for use in the event of a fire emergency.

Hydrant installations are inspected to confirm that maintenance has been carried out within the preceding 12 months and that all hydrant points are complete and fully operational.

4. Flow and Pressure Testing Requirements

Where practicable, all fire hydrants are subjected to static pressure testing as well as full flow and pressure testing. All test results are recorded and benchmarked against the requirements of SANS 10400.

The Code requires that a single hydrant be capable of delivering a minimum flow of 1 200 ℓ/min at a running pressure of 300 kPa. Where two hydrants are required to operate simultaneously, each hydrant must meet this performance requirement.

5. Compliance and Risk Management

Given the condition of municipal water infrastructure in many local authorities, it is essential for property owners to conduct independent hydrant flow and pressure testing to verify the effectiveness of their fire-fighting water supply.

Regular testing assists in meeting statutory and insurer requirements, while providing confidence that adequate water supplies will be available when required during a fire emergency.
